Top Visas for Moving Abroad: How to Make Your Dream of Living Abroad a Reality Now

If you’re reading this, it means you’re just as curious as I am about what it would be like to make a big move abroad. Maybe you’re dreaming of a slower pace, a healthier lifestyle, or simply a new adventure.

My husband and I are living proof that you can take the leap and embrace a freer, healthier life now. You don't have to wait for retirement to do it. Life can change on a dime, and that’s why I want my kids (and you!) to know that life is for living.

Today, let’s talk practicalities and inspiration as an American expat in Spain: Top Visas for Moving Abroad.

Navigating the Visa Maze: Multiple Paths to Your New Life

One of the first questions I get asked is, "How did you do it?"

The great news is that there are multiple, increasingly accessible pathways to living abroad. The new trend of Digital Nomad Visas (DNVs) is making it easier than ever for the expat-curious to make the jump.

But first, let’s look at the more traditional paths people over 40 are using successfully:

The Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV)

This is the traditional residency path for those who don't need to work in their new country. The NLV is a fantastic option if you have guaranteed, stable income from outside the country - like a pension, investments, or rental income - that is sufficient to support you and your family.

  • Key Requirement: It is typically a residency permit, not a work permit, so you cannot take on any paid work in your new country with this visa.

  • The Funds: For Spain's NLV in 2025, for example, the main applicant needs to show at least €28,800 per year (approximately €2,400 per month), with an additional amount for each dependent.

The Digital Nomad Visa (DNV)

Since Covid, over 70 countries have launched Digital Nomad Visas. The details vary, but in general, this visa allows you to live in a foreign country while making your money outside of it.

Basically, they want you to spend your money in the country (and possibly pay taxes), but not take their jobs. It’s a win-win!

  • The Spain DNV Update (where I live): Spain launched its Digital Nomad Visa in 2023. Up until recently, most approvals had been for contractors and freelancers. However, in the last few months, they have been approving more US W-2 employees. This DNV provides a three-year residency permit that can be extended for up to five years, allowing you to live and work remotely in Spain. The current 2025 income requirement for a single applicant is approximately €2,763 per month.

  • Other Options: The DNV landscape is global! Korea offers a 6-month DNV, and Croatia offers an 18-month DNV that is tax-free. It’s definitely an option worth looking into if you plan to work while living abroad.

The Educational Visa

This might not be the first option people later in life think of, but I have met several people here in Spain in their 50's and 60's on an educational visa! The requirement in Spain is typically that you attend class 20 hours a week, and there is no age requirement. If one of your goals is to learn the language when you move abroad, which I highly recommend for integration, this option might be a perfect fit.

My Bold Tip: There are several other types of visas, and all have their pros and cons. Laws change constantly. It’s always best to consult with an expert to determine which path is right for your unique situation.

Be Curious, Be Bold, and Live Your Dreams

My friend, you never know when your circumstances might change on a dime. I saw it happen when my dad was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s as my parents were retiring, and I lost a close friend before she turned 50. These moments solidified my belief: you have to enjoy life now.

This is your permission slip.

Be curious, be bold, and live out your dreams. Don't wait!
