Dual Citizenship: Unlocking Your EU Dream

From Valencia, Spain, with love! You know I'm all about taking a bold leap to live your dreams now, not waiting for retirement. My move to Spain in the Fall of 2024 was my "life is for living" moment. But in the midst of embracing a slower, healthier lifestyle here, I've discovered a hidden key that could unlock even more freedom for my family: dual citizenship.

If you're expat-curious, it’s easy to focus solely on the visa you need to get in. But a passport of a different color? That's the ultimate upgrade for travel, stability, and options.

The Secret I Almost Left Behind

While I'm here on Spain's Digital Nomad Visa (DNV), I've been spending my "free time" deep-diving into my family history, specifically my German heritage.

My discovery? Because my mother was German (a fact she never knew and thus never declared), I may be able to claim German citizenship and, critically, pass it on to my kids. This isn't the first time I've looked into it, and previously, I wasn't eligible.

But here is a life lesson for all of us: The rules of the game are constantly changing, so it’s worth taking another look if you crossed an option off the list previously! The biggest shift is that the laws have been updated to recognize ancestry that was previously overlooked, and now, more people are being allowed to hold two passports simultaneously. This means I can pursue my German citizenship without having to give up my US passport.

This powerful, strategic move transforms a family's legacy. It means I can gain a powerful EU passport without having to give up my US passport.

The Power of the EU Passport

Why go through this lengthy, document-intensive process? Because having German citizenship - an EU passport - is about more than just a place to live. It's about freedom and security:

  • Unrestricted EU Mobility: An EU passport grants me the right to live, work, and travel freely across all 27 EU member states, plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. That's unparalleled flexibility!

  • Simplified Life in Spain: While I'm still living in Valencia, having an EU passport means I have more options for taxation, social benefits, and access to healthcare across the whole union.

  • A "Plan B" for Generations: Once recognized, this citizenship can be passed on to future generations. That’s a legacy of global freedom for my children and their children.

I expect my documents will be submitted soon. While the official processing time is typically a couple of months, the influx of applications due to the recent law changes means it could take 18 months or more before I have the final documentation. But let me tell you, it's worth it!

My Challenge to You: Be Curious, Be Bold.

If you have German, Irish, Italian, or heritage from another country that offers citizenship by descent, I urge you: look again! Don’t let a faded family story or a past rejection stop you. The rules of the world are changing for the better, making it possible for us to claim more freedom and connection than ever before.

Life is for living, my friend. You never know when your circumstances might change on a dime. So don't wait. Be curious, be bold, and live out your dreams. I'm doing it now, and you can, too!
